How do you fall asleep?
That's a question that many of you reading this have probably been wondering lately. If you want to sleep badly enough won't it just happen? What if you are too distracted?
One of the biggest problems people have is that they try to go to sleep. If you try to go to sleep you oftentimes won't be able to. I'm not a neuroscientist so I don't know why, but it just doesn't work.
Have you ever tried to remember something, but just couldn't? You keep trying to think about it, but then, hours later when you stopped thinking about it, it just pops into your head? Sleep is just like that; the more you reach for it, the more it alludes you.
So what you have to do is distract yourself from trying to sleep. I know I know, you have probably heard that distractions keep you awake, but it is only the stressful distractions that keep you awake. If you distract yourself with something that isn't going to stress you out then it will be just like when you start thinking about something else and what alluded you 3 hours ago pops randomly into your head. When you think about other things then sleep will find you when you least expect it.
Just go through something in your head or read a book. Do or think about something that will keep your attention, but which isn't pressing and must be done. I'll give you some examples:
-If you aren't married, think about what you want your wedding to be like. Or think about what you want your future husband/wife to be like.
- Think of where you would like to go and plan a trip out in your head.
- Imagine what it would be like to be in a made up world. (i.e. To be a wizard with Harry Potter) Where would you go? What would you do?
- Think about what you are going to be doing 20 years from now (unless that stresses you out). Where would you like to be? With who? Doing what?
- Think about what it would be like to live forever. What changes would their be? What would it be like in a hundred years? A thousand? A million?
and finally, one of my most used favorites:
- Think about what you would do in a zombie apocalypse. Pick a place you would be when it happened and figure out how you would survive. You can use this idea over and over, thinking about scenarios where you are in different places (i.e. the Metro, your house, the highway, etc.)
Don't knock it until you try it.
Insomnia is a Real Problem, but...
I'm not discounting that insomnia is a real problem, but it cannot be denied that many people that think they have insomnia just don't know how to fall asleep. Some other people just have bad habits (including me) and drink so much caffeine during the day that it becomes near impossible to sleep when they want to.
If this hub can help even one person then I will be happy.
At the very least you will have some interesting topics to think about as you try to sleep!
